North Shore isn’t just famous for being the surfing capital of the world. The beaches in North Shore swarm with surfers from around the world because of all the surfing competitions that are held here.
There are three of the most popular surfing competitions that are held in North Shore every December that make up the VANS Triple Crown of Surfing. These competitions are so intense and filled with high profile professional surfers. Most surfers consider it the Super Bowl of surfing.
The Reef Hawaiian Pro competition is the first in the line up of three and it is held at Ali’i Beach Park. For this competition, men and women can compete for a large amount of prize money and doing well in this competition also helps professional surfers qualify for the ASP World Tour.
The O’Neill World Cup of Surfing is then held at Sunset Beach as the second competition. This competition has been held here since 1975 and boasts of large sums of prize money for competitors who do well. The prize money isn’t the only thing that attracts surfers to this competition. The status and ability to compete in the ASP World Tour is the true prize.
The Billabong Pipeline Masters is the last competition in the VANS Triple Crown of Surfing. It is held every year at Ehukai Beach better yet known as the Banzai Pipeline. It gets its name from the incredible crisp pipe barrels that are produced here. The competition was established in 1970 and also has large cash prizes for the winners. It is also the last stop on the WSL Championship Tour.
Another incredible and highly exclusive surfing competition is Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational held at Waimea Bay. This surfing competition is held in memory of the legendary surfer Eddie Aikau.
The reason why we say this competition is exclusive is because the only way that you can participate is by invite. On top of needing a VIP spot on the guest list this competition isn’t held every year. It is only held if the surf meets the necessary standards for this competition.
That means that every year they block of time in preparation for this event and only if the waves and weather conditions line up just right will the competition be held.
